FESTIVAL
Reggae master Johnny Dread is to showcase his Caribbean-flavored
musical magic for Florida Keys audiences during the Lower
Keys Reggae Fest, scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, April
5.
The festival presents the sounds of the islands set against
the swaying palms of Camp Sawyer, a Boy Scout enclave overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean at mile marker (MM) 34 on West Summerland
Key.
Headliner Johnny Dread is widely renowned for his unique
blend of Caribbean and world beat rhythms, Afro-Cuban and
rock sounds that reflect his Cuban-American heritage and
Rasta spirit. A seasoned singer-songwriter and performer,
he has appeared at international festivals and concerts with
such stellar talents as Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu.
Also scheduled to strut its stuff on the festival' waterfront
stage is the Miami–based band Jahfe, known for rhythmic
roots reggae fusion and a positive message. Bringing diverse
international backgrounds to their rhythmic collaboration,
the members of Jahfe have worked with consummate artists
including Wyclef Jean.
While rocking to the masterful musical entertainment, attendees
can enjoy attractions including food and libations. In addition,
vendors are to be on hand offering crafts and island items.
Music lovers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets,
or sit beside the ocean to listen to the reggae rhythms.
Gates open at noon, with music set to begin at approximately
1:30 p.m. At the festival’s close, the sky is to be
lit by the orange-red hues of a dramatic Keys sunset over
the water.
Tickets for the festival are $20 per person in advance
or $25 per person at the door. Admission is free for children
age 8 and under. Advance tickets can be purchased at the
Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce visitor center, MM 31 oceanside
in Big Pine or KeysTix.com. Visa, Mastercard and American
Express accepted.
