14th Annual Big Pine and Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament

07 Dolphin Tourny During the weekend June 15 – 17th the Big Pine and Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament hosted 202 anglers, fishing aboard 71 boats. 52% of the anglers traveled from outside Monroe County. Captain’s meeting; weigh-in and the awards cookout by Mangrove’s Mama’s took place at the Sugarloaf Key Resort KOA. Sponsorships from the Dolphin Marina & Lodging, Sugarloaf Key
Resort KOA, Jig’s Bait & Tackle, Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary Key; Key West Harbor, Hammerhead Termite Control, Sweetwater Homes, Keys Federal Credit Union, Marine Bank, Chicago Title of the Florida Keys, Big Pine Storage, Rudy Krause Construction and Lytton Construction contributed some of the many prizes, giveaways and awards presented during the tournament.

Weigh master, Dave Wiley and assistant weigh master, Captain Lenny Svetin, weighed in 51 dolphin, 3 tuna and 3 wahoo, many of the dolphin in the 15 to 30 lb range.

Special Awards
A ceramic tile teak jewelry box and $200 cash sponsored by Jig’s Bait & Tackle were given to Top Lady angler Jeannie Johnson of Summerland Key; fishing aboard the Double J who caught a 24.55 pound dolphin; a ceramic tile teak plaque and $150 cash were given to 2nd Place Lady Angler, Anna Mae White of Summerland Key; fishing aboard the Bull Ship who caught a 21.30 pound dolphin and a gift certificate to Nadine’s Day Spa and $100 cash were given to 3rd Place Lady angler Tonya Toro from Miami who caught a 20.5 pound dolphin. Custom Ricky Rod and reel combo’s from Jig’s Bait & Tackle went to Gordon Friss-Pettih of Big Pine Key, fishing aboard the R & R for catching a 27.55 pound tuna and to David Everett , fishing aboard the Strike Zone for bringing in a 37.45 pound wahoo. A Hard Luck award went to Zack Arcuri of Atlantic Beach, FL who was bested in the Youth Division by a “girl”.

It was announced the 15th Annual Big Pine & Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament will be held June 6th, 7th, & 8th, 2008.
